The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, a leader in neurology and telemedicine, and Specialists On Call, Inc. (SOC), the nation’s largest privately funded telemedicine provider, announced they’re collaborating in acute teleneurology.
This program links hospitals throughout Florida and several other states with the Miller School’s expert neurologists. The Miller School is recognized as one of the world’s leading academic medical centers for the management of cerebral vascular disease and treats simple and complex vascular disorders using the most recent developments in emergency care and stroke neurology. The Miller School/SOC linkage gives participating hospitals 24-hour access to some of the best emergency neurologists in the country.
According to Ralph Sacco, M.S., M.D., professor and chair of neurology at the Miller School, “Our large and growing stroke, critical care and interventional neurology faculty at the Miller School and Jackson Memorial are excited about collaborating with SOC to expand the availability of acute neurology services.
“Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death in Florida and we desperately need to increase the number of patients with access to acute stroke care,” Sacco says.
SOC provides urban, suburban and critical access hospitals nationwide with immediate 24/7 access to highly trained specialty physicians. With operational bases on both coasts, SOC is the only privately funded national teleneurology provider to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.
“I am delighted that the Miller School’s Neurology and TeleHealth departments will partner with SOC to provide `just-in-time’ expertise to effectively diagnose, and recommend treatment to, patients experiencing acute neurologic events,” says Anne Burdick, M.D., M.P.H., associate dean for telehealth and community outreach.
“We are very, very excited about the opportunity to collaborate with the University of Miami,” says Dr. Joe Peterson, CEO of Specialists on Call. He describes Drs. Sacco and Burdick as innovative collaborators who look beyond traditional boundaries to achieve great results. “For SOC, this is one more demonstration that we can collaborate with academic medical teams to extend their direct impact well beyond their medical center.”
